Establishment, Objectives and Organization
The Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce which was established in 1947 is the oldest chamber in the country. Its current membership stands at over 36000 and accounts for over 70% of all membership in the country's chamber system.
Its establishment was necessitated because of felt needs to:
- advance industry and commerce,
- render information to members,
- create relationships with chambers of commerce and industry in other countries,
- provide forums where members can come together to discuss business and economic problems and seek solutions,
- train members and potential members in various areas of business activities,
- publicize the country's products and services to domestic as well as to foreign markets.
In order to realize its set objectives, the Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce has the following organizational structure:
- a General Assembly - which is the highest governing body,
- a Board of Directors - the executive organ of the Chamber is composed of a President, a Vice President and other elected board of directors,
- a Secretariat - headed by a Secretary General who directs and controls the day-to- day administration of the Chamber.
Furthermore, several working committees, each of which is focusing on specific line of trade, are designated to assist the Board. These committees include:
- foreign trade promotion,
- domestic trade and services,
- finance and tax affairs, and industry.
Each committee, chaired by a member of the Board of Directors, is entrusted with the task of undertaking studies on trade constraints and thereby presenting solutions and recommendations to the Board.
MEMBERSHIP
The Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce being the oldest Chamber and located at the commercial and capital city of the country embraces over 70 percent of the country’s business community in all sectors of economic activity. Currently it has over 36000 members and the trend is steadily increasing as shown in the following chart.
